Police Officer
Applicants with no prior Law Enforcement experience will enter a 22-week basic training academy. Upon competition at the academy, they will undergo 16 weeks of field training supervised by a Field Training Officer. Upon successful completion of field training, they will be assigned to the Uniform Patrol Division to answer calls for service in the City of Baton Rouge. “If you have currently passed a Civil Service test with a 75% or higher in this position, you must complete the BRPD Intake and BRPD application. NEW LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS
As of Sept 10th, 2022, new, recruits can earn up to $53,148 after the completion of their first year.
LISTED BELOW IS A BREAKDOWN OF ANNUAL EARNINGS
Base starting salary while in the academy | $40,906 – annually |

After one year from the date of hire (3% merit increase) | $43,398 – annually |

Additional pay, annually with listed education:
- 80 + hours of college – $1,125 annually
- Bachelor’s degree – $3,000 annually
- Master’s degree – $3,750 annually
New officers are being hired at base pay step 5 ($40,906) and a 3% merit increase at 6 months from the date of hire ($42,134) will receive an additional, 3% merit increase to their base salary in the month of January for each year of service up to pay step 19.
